Affiliate Marketing 102

Erik here, and this week I have been showing you the ins and outs of Affiliate Marketing.

There are three basic steps to becoming a successful Affiliate Marketer:

1. Find great stuff to promote.
2. Set up the technical stuff.
3. Drive traffic to your affiliate links.

This is the second post in the series: how to setup the technical stuff.

So you have an affiliate link to something that you want to promote…

The only problem is that it’s long and ugly and it looks like an affiliate link. So you want to hide it, redirect it, mask it in some way so people don’t get spooked off from clicking on it.

Easy!

There are several ways to do what you are trying to do. The easiest (and most professional looking in my opinion) is:

1. Purchase a Domain Name at GoDaddy (www.godaddy.com) for about $12 bucks per year.

2. Inside GoDaddy, after you make your purchase, roll your mouse over the word “Domains” in the main navigation, then click “My Domains”

3. Select the Domain Name in question and then click “Forward” in the navigation.

4. Either option works here, paste in your affiliate link and save your changes

5. GoDaddy will forward all traffic to that Domain Name right to your affiliate link… And mask it too!

Your assignment? Take the product you have decided to promote…

Get a Domain Name, mask your affiliate link from yesterday, and post it as a comment so I can get a peek at it…

(Here is an example: I am an affiliate for BlockBuster, so I took my long, ugly BlockBuster affiliate link and turned it into www.makeitamovienight.com)

Anyways, the next step is to drive traffic to your affiliate links, which we will deal with tomorrow!

I hope this has been informative…

See yah tomorrow for Affiliate Marketing 103!

To your success,

Erik

    Erik,

I hope this is okay as I have over 20 domain names LOL and I like to use recommends instead of forwarding another domain as I have a few affiliate products so here is the link for my product
    http://www.laurasbasicstowebdesign.com/recommends/videowizard

Let me know and I will get a domain name :)

  3. Erik on August 26th, 2008 12:40 pm

Laura: That’s fine:) I suggested Domain Names because not everyone has a website yet.

Dianne: Well done… now you need to forward your affiliate link through a Domain Name. See if you can get www.amazingbodytransformation.com or something like that…

    Erik

    Hi Erik,

    Subj: Affiliate Marketing 102

    Dianne:

Well done… now forward it as per my instructions. When it’s forwarding properly typingin that Domain Name should bring your product page right up!

    It works :-0!

Sorry! I should have mentioned to you that I had followed your instructions and forwarded/masked the Clickbank link.

I look forward to tomorrows installment.

What’s up everyone. I am playing a bit of catch as all of my in-laws as well as my sister live in Jacksonville, Florida. Tropical Storm Fay decided to hit land in Ponte Vedre about 16 miles from all of the above mentioned and as important as this is, so are they. Everything is good and they are well in case you folks are wondering. Ok now down to this business I am promoting a CPL (Erik I hope this is ok with you) It had a very ugly url the whole http://blah.blah.com/1245.1232/upid (whatever) anyways I redirected it to http://www.debtrelief-starttoday.com I hope it is working ok as in paying
( I have since figured out that the awesoe url I thought I had has some down things about it)
    1. It has the word relief in it which is 1 of the 10 most misspelled words uuugghh. nut it’s what I have and I will make it work by spelling it for them every chance I get.
    2. It has the 2 t’s stuck together at the end the “starttoday” part and have learned that this is a rether large hurdle for most. But Again My plan is to persevere by showing and spelling for them until I can create a permanent fix for the problem or maybe It has a way of fixing itself.

Erik is there a problem with promoting a CPL via your method if so I will change what I have already done so that I can follow your course better.
    Let me know

Thanks and wishing everyone major success,
Mike Gilchrist (aka Mike G which I will be posting under from now on. (it makes me feel better :))(just so that everyone knows why I use Mike G))

    Erik,

I noticed that when I type the URL in the address bar it forwards to the product but down on the tab the Clickbank link appears. Have I done something wrong or do I need to do something else?

    Thanks,

    Dianne

  9. Erik on August 26th, 2008 4:42 pm

Dianne, Mike G: perfect, both of you. Mike: glad to hear your family is okay:)

    Erik,

I am sorry, but I was hoping that I could get a confirmation to a question. Is it ok to promote a ppl with what you are showing us?
I have just set this up and I can easily change it if this is not “up to par” with what you are showing.
    Thanks,
    Mike G

    Erik,

This is my domain name: thebestdietsolution.com

I know the diet market is very competitive, but it is also an ever “expanding market”(pun intended)!

I also found a physical product to promote along with it.

    Thanks for looking.

    Dar

  12. Erik on August 26th, 2008 5:56 pm

    Mike:

Yes. It’s fine. My goal is to show people the basics: how to research, create quick Domain redirects, and then drive a little traffic.

    Dar: well done!

I am promoting air purification as I believe that is something most people take for granted. Homes are far more polluted than the outside air. This web site expalins the process and will send me people that want a free trial of the product.

    Thanks

    Greetings Sir:
    Home work completed:
    www.downloadentertainmentonline.com
However when I test it, I get a “Being Parked By GoDaddy”. Is that because it is new? Maybe because it is so late….
Anywhoo…waiting for next e-mail…I think this is the start of an excellent adventure in my education of internet marketing.
    Thanks so much Bro,
    W

Hi Erik and Everyone, I am interested in natural herbal remedies and thought this is one that will always be around. I had already bought it through Namecheap just two weeks ago. All help greatly appreciated. Has anyone noticed that when marketers offer step by step (and you buy it)it actually isn’t step by step that a newbie requires??? So this is great the way Erik is doing this.
    Happy Wednesday
    Carole

    Hi Erik–

Reading everyone’s comments and had a thought on Mike G’s regarding debtrelief domain name. I had heard that in the case of commonly misspelled words (like relief) it could pay for itself if you buy the domain with the “wrong” spelling and direct it to your site. Do you agree with that? In this case, Mike G would buy http://www.debtreleif-starttoday.com. On a related point, does it pay to buy all the hyphen and/or dot options? ie, debt-relief-start-today
